Meo Fusciuni: Fragrance as an Inner Journey

On memory, silence, and perfume as a spiritual exploration

In contemporary artistic perfumery, few creators approach fragrance with the same introspective intensity as Meo Fusciuni. Over the past sixteen years, his work has evolved as a deeply personal narrative - one shaped not by market trends, but by memory, travel, literature, and inner reflection.

Each of his creations often feels less like a product and more like a chapter of a diary: fragments of lived experience translated into scent. Rooted in philosophy and guided by a profound sensitivity to place and emotion, Fusciuni’s perfumes unfold as intimate landscapes where materials, memories, and silence coexist.

Working closely with Federica, who shapes the visual and aesthetic dimension of the brand, Meo Fusciuni has built a universe defined by restraint, contemplation, and authenticity. In an industry increasingly driven by speed and visibility, his work remains deliberately slow - attentive to the invisible dialogue between emotion and raw material.

In this conversation with The Nosepress, Meo Fusciuni reflects on the role of travel in his creative process, the importance of silence in artistic work, and perfume as a living expression of memory and spiritual exploration.

Interview

Your fragrances often feel like chapters of a personal diary rather than commercial releases. When you begin a new creation, do you start from a memory, a place, a philosophical reflection, or from a raw material that speaks to you first?

Meo Fusciuni:First of all, thank you for this interview. I would like to mention that, in order to answer these questions, I chose to listen to an album that is very important to me, All Melody by Nils Frahm.

My work is an urgency, a request that comes from my spirit. In these sixteen years since the birth of Meo Fusciuni, I have never tried to follow the market and olfactory trends that, as in fashion, mark a historical period. I have always looked within myself and in the travels I take with Federica.

Everything is told by the life we live and the emotions that pass through our hearts. My method is unique. I always start with the name, which then leads me to the story or indicates the journey. After that I live the emotional experience, which leads me to write and to live the story itself.

Only after these stages does the olfactory idea and the creation of the perfume come into play. Every raw material I choose tells a story about my state of mind - a moment in the life of this real or imaginary experience.

Travel and introspection appear to be central to your artistic language. How does a physical journey transform into an olfactory structure? At what point does lived experience become a formula?

Meo Fusciuni:As I mentioned earlier, experience is the basis of my olfactory research. When I embark on a journey, my mind already knows where I want to go.

When I left for India to create Varanasi, I already knew in my heart that it would be a shocking fragrance, beyond all logic. But experience transforms the idea into matter, the dream into reality, helping me understand exactly which raw materials should enter the formula in order to best express the fragrance.

I had imagined creating a deep and intense perfume, but only my experience in Varanasi made me realize that I should use an infusion of ambergris.

There is a strong sense of silence and contemplation in your work. In a niche market that is increasingly louder and more competitive, how do you preserve this intimacy and depth?

Meo Fusciuni:Before answering this question, I changed the record and put Silence is Sexy by Einstürzende Neubauten on my turntable. Believe me, I decided to play this record even before reading your question - what an incredible coincidence.

Silence is often inside me. As you know, I love listening to music while creating and doing research. The silence you refer to, I believe, is a silence and a slow, expansive background noise of the soul.

My work - and Federica’s work on aesthetics and communication - requires silence and a great deal of listening. Today’s market is much louder and more chaotic than it was fifteen years ago.

It would not be correct to say that I do not fit into this market, because I have never tried to enter its logic. I only know my way and my method, and I do not change them - even when I create for other brands.

Silence, contemplation, and depth are deeply connected. They are the cornerstone of my work and my journey, and our fragrances carry this emotional and spiritual dimension, whatever story I am telling.

Your aesthetic is minimal and almost ascetic. Is this restraint rooted in personal philosophy, cultural influence, or a deliberate artistic discipline?

Meo Fusciuni:The aesthetic side of our work is mainly Federica’s doing, although we share many aspects of the creative process.

Over the years we have traveled extensively and absorbed many artistic and cultural influences. Japanese aesthetics, in particular, have had a strong impact on our visual and aesthetic direction.

My personal philosophical orientation is the result of many years of research in different disciplines that have influenced my character and my way of seeing the world and my own work.

I like to believe that people who encounter our work can perceive this aspect of our identity. It keeps me grounded in my research and gives me a positive outlook toward the future.

Many of your fragrances evoke memory in a tactile way - coffee, paper, incense, skin. Do you compose primarily through emotion, or is there a precise technical architecture underlying each creation?

Meo Fusciuni:Today the work of a good perfumer lies in finding a balance between two elements: emotion and a solid technical foundation.

Naturally, the first stage of creating a formula is entrusted to emotion, which is instinctive, impulsive, and visceral. Later, in the second or third phase, after composing one or more samples, I begin to think more technically and focus on the chemistry of the raw materials.

In life you must always seek balance, like walking on a tightrope suspended in the air.

When I translate emotion into a formula, the time I spend listening to individual raw materials becomes very important. I try to listen to what they are telling me and begin from those silent words.

You often describe perfume as something spiritual. Do you believe fragrance has the power to transform a person internally, or is it more a mirror that reflects who we already are?

Meo Fusciuni:I strongly believe that a fragrance not only reflects our soul but can also help it discover a new dimension of itself.

Perfume is a living body - a formula created by a person who has a soul, a past, and a memory. In this sense it is a living soul.

I deeply believe in the holistic vision of my work. I know that this may seem unusual in today’s world of perfumery, which is often governed by business and trends. But I need to believe that perfume can accompany our lives, helping us feel better and understand our path.

For me personally, this is exactly what perfume does.

Looking toward the future, do you feel the need to evolve stylistically, or is your artistic journey more about deepening the same inner exploration rather than changing direction?

Meo Fusciuni:That is a beautiful question.

If you observe and listen to my work over the past sixteen years - seventeen fragrances created for our brand and many others for different projects - you will understand that there is only one answer: changing the direction of our research has been our mantra throughout the years.

The future, like the past and the present, will always remain focused on exploring the soul.

Conclusion

The Nosepress sincerely thanks Meo Fusciuni for this thoughtful and deeply introspective conversation.

In a world where speed and visibility increasingly shape the rhythm of perfumery, his work reminds us that fragrance can still emerge from silence, from lived experience, and from a sincere dialogue with memory.

We wish him continued creative freedom and the clarity to keep exploring the inner landscapes that have defined his work - allowing perfume to remain not only an artistic form, but a path of personal and spiritual discovery.
